Igniting Restorative Affirmation

Sojourn (also known as Black Studies English 4 at David Douglas High School), is a class offered to senior students. This program is intended to call students on a journey of self-discovery and increased awareness of African and African American history. Students will be challenged to engage in conversations, activities, and projects which move students towards a stronger understanding of their history.

Modules

Race & Identity

Learning Objectives:
  • Recognize past and current stereotypes.
  • Actively discuss and define identity.

Race in Education

Learning Objectives:
  • Highlight lesser-known African American contributors (inventors, educators, scientists, writers, artists).

Black Diaspora Freedom Struggles

Learning Objectives:
  • Explore pre-Atlantic slave trade African history (countries, dynasties, empires, Kings).

Harlem Renaissance Era

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand events leading to the Harlem Renaissance.
  • Learn about historical figures who shaped this era.

Civil Rights

Learning Objectives:
  • Study protest strategies during the Civil Rights era.
  • Explore key events and figures.
