Why was the Journey Academy started?
Journey academy began as an opportunity to offer REAP’s services to students outside of the schools we serve. REAP offers Black studies classes at David Douglas High school for credit, which is currently the only Black studies high school for credit courses taught in the state. This amazing opportunity only serves David Douglas Seniors.  Journey Academy has the space to serve middle school students across the state and around the world with virtual classes.
What impact have you seen this program provide?
Students who attend are able to get academic support from teachers who look like them. Our staff and volunteers are diverse and well equipped to work with the youth we serve. Also youth are able to receive free classes on topics that their school does not offer such as Business and Entrepreneurship, Black Studies, and Computer Coding. Lastly, as we rounded out our first year facilitating the classes, students shared that they really appreciated the teaching ratios. The student to teacher ratio remains small in order to provide quality support and engagement. Students reported understanding their school work better through Journey Academy versus in their school environment.
What problem is the program trying to solve?
Journey Academy is able to provide unique class experiences to our middle school youth who are not able to access such resources otherwise. Schools do not often have Black Studies, Business and entrepreneurship, or Computer Coding classes offered. Other community programs may exist, but they generally cost the families or are full for registrations. Also our students are able to connect with staff who are able to affirm who they are as a culturally diverse team. This is a unique experience that brings solutions to many concerns and challenges that face families today
What is the application and selection process for the program?
Students simply register each term for the classes online to apply.
How does Journey Academy plan to expand its reach and impact in the future?
Journey Academy intends to involve schools in the process with more direct connections with student’s and their teachers for direct homework support. We also are looking to eventually provide credit incentives for students to attend. We are excited to expand our services across state lines with our online students. We are hoping to eventually have our students who attend school in Mali connect with our Journey Academy students and be able to take classes as well. Our program is ambitious, but so are our students. We are working to ignite, elevate, and engage the next wave of leaders, this is the academy where such work is developed.
